The 3,000-watt inverter that feeds the computers, CB radio and power outlets stopped working while the American Red Cross van was in Washington state. 3 different shops had looked at the ERV and no one was able to solve the problem. As the vehicle made its’ way across the United States a few people had suggested ENORMIS Mobile Specialties in Erie, Pa to get the electrical system repaired.
The American Red Cross recently contacted the team at ENORMIS Mobile Specialties in Erie for help in diagnosing a problem with the electrical system in one of their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans. The Red Cross had converted this Sprinter into an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) by adding desk space, computer workstations and multiple USB and power outlets.
American Red Cross ERV Power System Repair
Jerry, a Red Cross Emergency Response Team leader who is responsible for this ERV, contacted us. After listening him talk about the issues with the van, Doug immediately scheduled a diagnostic appointment. When the van arrived, Mike Macaluso and Ken Whiteman, one of our MECP-Certified technicians, set to work tracing the wiring to and from the inverter. We found several issues with the installation. At some point, a hole had been drilled in the top of the inverter. The metal shavings were rattling around loose inside the unit and had shorted out one of the filtering capacitors.
Further research showed that some of the wiring to one of the outlets in the rear of the van had worn through where it was rubbing on a screw and a rivet. The exposed wiring was shorting directly to the chassis of the vehicle. Ken removed some of the cabinets and shelving from the rear of the vehicle to run new wiring to the outlet. As you can imagine, he made sure the new wiring was away from any sharp edges or objects and was properly protected and secured. Ken also replaced the damaged inverter with a new Samlex SAM-3000-12 unit so that the system would be reliable and available for use when needed. Ken tested the system before and after reassembling the interior to ensure it would be flawless.
