1955 GMC 630 Fire Truck Camera System for Erie Insurance Group

Camera SystemErie Insurance Group recently contacted ENORMIS Mobile Specialties to inquire about adding a camera system to their 1955 GMC 630 fire truck. The truck has been retrofitted with seating in the back and is used at community events and parades. The truck is stored in a narrow spot in their storage garage and the driver, Rick, often doesn’t have anyone to help him maneuver the vehicle into place. Our Integration specialist, Doug Reichert, asked Rick to bring the vehicle to ENORMIS so the team could have a look at it and design a safety system.

Vehicle Inspection and Camera System Design

Camera System
For ease of viewing, 3 different cameras can be displayed at once.
Camera System
Up to 4 cameras at once can be viewed on the monitor.
Camera System
The side view camera is easily viewed on the monitor.
Camera System
The rear camera allows the driver to see objects behind the truck, when backing up.

After looking at the truck and talking to Rick about where and how the vehicle is used, Doug designed a four-camera system to provide maximum safety and convenience. Once the parts arrived, Rick brought the fire truck to our team of MECP-Certified technicians.

We started by installing a 7-inch LCD screen at the top of the windshield. The display is bolted directly to the mount for the front beacon above the windshield. The wiring for the display is secured to the existing wiring for the warning beacon light.

High-Sensitivity Camera Installation

Camera System
Side-mount cameras further enhance the safety of this fire truck.
Camera System
The main backup camera is mounted in the center of the truck.

The parking system uses three cameras. We mounted a heavy-duty camera that uses a high-sensitivity 1/3-inch Sharp CCD image sensor on the rear of the trunk. This camera is positioned in the center of the vehicle and lets Rick know when he is approaching the back wall of the storage garage or a curb or object while at an event. The camera includes two banks of IR transmitters and can function in complete darkness.

The second and third cameras are mounted to the running boards of the truck just behind the front wheels. These cameras include an angled surface mount kit that points the Sharp image sensor rearward. Rick can use these cameras to make sure the center and front of the truck fit through the storage garage door opening safely.

Passenger Monitor Camera

Camera System
An additional camera is pointed towards the passengers.
Camera System
Keeping an eye on the safety of the passengers is easy with the addition of the rear camera.

We added a fourth camera to the vehicle and aimed it at the seating area in the back of the fire truck. This camera allows Rick to keep an eye on his passengers and make sure everyone remains seated while the vehicle is in motion. All the wiring for the cameras is concealed as much as possible, and we used split-loom tubing for a neat and tidy look.

Fire Truck Safety Camera Solution

Camera System
This great looking truck will stay looking great and driving safer, thanks to our camera system.

After we had mounted and aimed the cameras, Rick returned to ENORMIS so that we could show him how to use the new video monitoring system. He was thrilled with our workmanship and excited to get the fire truck back on the road. If you are looking for a safety system for your vehicle, drop by ENORMIS Mobile Specialties in Erie or send us an e-mail using our contact page.
