Can you add a Ford brake controller to an F-150 that does not have one? Cody, a Wattsburg, PA, resident was looking to add a brake controller to his 2018 Ford F-150. Cody called our store and spoke with Doug Reichert, our Integration Specialist, who said, “No problem!”

Doug asked Cody if the vehicle already had a 7-pin connector on the rear of the truck. Cody said it did not — it only had the 4-pin connector.

Cody had called on Thursday and wanted the job completed by Friday night, so he could leave for a trip on Saturday morning. Doug got the ball rolling by ordering the Ford factory brake controller and Ford 7-pin/4-pin connector for next-day delivery. Cody dropped off the vehicle on Friday morning and Ken started by installing the Ford 7-pin/4-pin connector assembly into the bumper of the truck. It looked factory-installed.

Cody’s truck did not have a circuit for trailer brakes, so Ken created a custom wiring harness from the rear bumper of the truck to the under-hood fuse box. At the under-hood fuse box, Ken created a 20 amp breaker-protected circuit.

After installing the wiring and brake controller, Ken programmed the truck to recognize the 7-pin connector and brake controller. Once he completed the programming, the brake controller interfaced with the instrument panel just like Ford intended. The Ford dash display tells Cody when the trailer is connected and what gain the brake controls are set at.

Cody picked the vehicle up later that day in plenty of time for his weekend trip.
